This is the obligatory Happy New Year post, but also another place for me to put some of my 2014 goals (note - not 'resolutions'!) to keep myself honest about them. I'll also be posting on twitter and a few other places.
The first thought I had for a goal is specifically connected to this being 2014, which is the 450th anniversary of the birth of William Shakespeare. I have been on a bit of a Shakespeare kick lately anyway, so I don't expect this one will be TOO hard to achieve: to read/watch/listen to all of Shakespeare's plays. I'm going to read a sonnet a day too as a bonus. I'll mostly likely be tweeting and blogging about this particular goal through my Tudor history accounts, etc.
The next one is a typical "lose weight" - in this case to continue losing weight since I had already lost about 10 pounds in the last few months of 2013 once I decided to kick myself in the arse about it. No, you're not going to get my goal number here, but I will say the goal date is at the end of July when we have our summer board meeting out at the observatory.
Another, probably fairly typical, is to continue decreasing my credit card debit. Again, no numbers, but I'd like to get half of my revolving balance on one of my big cards paid off. (Sadly, I'll still have one other large one, but I hope to continue chipping away at it too.)
The next two are related to the vast pile of craft projects in various states of completion. My goal is to frame (or finish into ornaments or whatever) six projects that I've already completed the stitching on and to finish the stitching on 10 projects (small ones count!). I'll most likely just post about those on Lara's Loose Threads.
The rest are book related. I've got a huge stack of books that authors and publishers have so generously sent me over the years and I've been really bad about writing reviews of them. So I'm going to set the goal of writing 10 book reviews for my Tudor history blog. I've already read several of the books, but I just need to sit down and review them! And for reading in general, I've set my 2014 Reading Challenge at Goodreads to 30 books, which should be doable since it includes all the audiobooks that I listen to driving to and from work.
So, let's see how I do! I'll go over the list at the end of the year and tally them up.

Another arbitrary milestone!
Yesterday marked the 8th anniversary of this blog, so it's another time for me to lament not blogging more here. I've figured out that part of the fall-off of posts is due to the fact that I started using Twitter and a lot of things that I would have posted here end up posted there. But I will still continue to try to post more!

Six years!
I know that I don't post nearly often enough but I did want to mark the sixth anniversary of the blog! I'll be heading out to the Texas Renaissance Festival this weekend so I'm sure I'll have a post up about that soon after. The photos may take longer than usual to process this year because I'm going to be trying a few new things, including some further experiments with HDR. Stay tuned!
New old blog... or something like that
Because Blogger decided to discontinue FTP publishing (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it was slow and occasionally broke for days on end), I had to move all of the blogs I used Blogger for to new addresses. This presented a bit of a problem with the blog on this site, since it was the homepage! So the new address is blog.larae.net, which you will be automatically forwarded to from the old homepage at plain larae.net. I'm also going to use this blog to test out some of the new design tools and stuff that I have access to now that I'm not using the old publishing service. So if things change often, don't be surprised!

As you can probably tell from the dramatic decline in posting frequency (besides the weekly picture) 2009 turned out to be a pretty busy year for me. I'm not really making any resolutions this year but it is certainly a goal of mine to be able to blog more (here and at other sites I run).
It's kind of hard to believe 2010 is here. I felt the same way 2001, and in both cases I'm disappointed that we're not at the technological level that Arthur C. Clarke imagined for us. Although we did at least crash the Galileo spacecraft into Jupiter to prevent it from ever possibly crashing into Europa. You know, just in case - "All these world are yours except Europa. Attempt no landing there." :)

Lara's Loose Threads
I was trying to figure out how to incorporate my needlework and quilting stuff into the re-worked version of my homepage and I realized that the answer was staring me in the face. A blog! There isn't a whole lot up over there yet, but I'll be posting more photos in the future.

Yet another month goes by...
Well, I certainly didn't expect yet another month to go by with out another post, but yet is has! The beginning of April was really crazy, and then it was a week or so of catch-up after that. I've been writing up some posts off-line, but I haven't put any finishing touches on yet... just mostly random thoughts and such. I've also been working on what will be the latest addition to the website and my continuing web adventures. I'll elaborate more soon over at the main TudorHistory.org blog!
Where to begin?
I wasn’t sure how to start out the first “real” post to my personal blog, but the subject presented itself nicely when I started going through the old Tudor History site "updates" pages to add to the main site blog. What a trip down memory lane. The first “What’s New” pages I had were from the July 1997, when I moved my Tudor History site to the old tudor.simplenet.com address from the machine that was on my desk at work.
It’s been interesting to see the progress (and lack thereof) that I’ve made on the Tudor History site over the years. It has existed in some form or another for ten years now, so I feel that I should be much farther along the path of where I want to go by now. But then I stop and think about the various changes that have taken place in my life, particularly over the past five years, and I get more realistic.
It’s been interesting to see the record of how many coughs and colds I’ve had through the years (and those are just the ones I complained about in the updates), but that is one of the hazards of working at a university with 50,000 people from all over the world crammed into a relatively small area. Not to mention interacting with the public and school kids as part of the outreach stuff I do at work. I’m constantly coming into contact with new germ sources! And, for the record (although I didn’t mention it on the main site blog) I’ve already had my first cold of this semester.
I thought I had spewed more about my big burnout stretch in 2001, but I guess I did it through email instead of the site updates. I wasn’t treating the update page as a journal (or blog, before a lot of people even knew what one was) that much then, so I didn’t elaborate too much. It was a pretty rough time for lots of reasons, and I have to admit that quite a bit of it came from running the Tudor History site and Tudor Talk. I had a bad confluence of getting a nasty-gram from the National Portrait Gallery (long story), someone trying to take over the email list, and getting some really hurtful emails about the site. I really shouldn’t let the latter get to me, but sometimes it is hard not to. Especially when it comes with the other stuff and while I was taking a very tough class, which was leaving me pretty tired. And little did I know that would only be the beginning of how tired I would be for the rest of the year…
Obviously at some point I managed to shake off the burnout and started to devote more time to the Tudor site again. Last year I finally uploaded the new design with the new front page and a consistent design through the content pages. I have already decided to redo some of it again, but in a way that I think will make the information more accessible. I also need to go through and add the search link to all the pages, but that’s going to take a while!
Well, I think I’ll close out this first post here. Expect more nonsensical ramblings soon!
